The Variety Show to Conquer Cancer!
In 2013, Barry signed up for the Alberta Ride to Conquer Cancer because his wife, Jodie, told him too (she also rides). He said yes because, to quote Barry, “fight the fights you want to win”. He has ridden in the event every year since then.
The ride is a 220+ Km fundraising bicycle ride over two days, in Support of The Alberta Cancer Foundation. As part of the sign up, each participant must raise $2500.
Rather than ask friends and family to simply donate, the idea was sparked to use his organizational talents to create a show where the ticket price would go towards the donation requirement. And The Variety Show to Conquer Cancer was born.
With the help of his good friend and co-host, Rob, Barry commenced a labour of love in producing and organizing these annual Variety Show events, with Comedy as the main theme. With the support of The Loose Moose Theatre, these events have grown in size every year and now raises close to $10, 000 each year. Every year showcases different talented performers from the Calgary area, and have hosted people like:
Comedians – Cory Mack (JFL, YYComedy festival founder and host), Lori Gibbs (Comedy Now!), and Trent McClellan (This Hour has 22 Minutes).
Actor/improviser Andrew Phung (Kims Convenience)
Always a fun show for a great cause!
